In our age, few things draw the ire of those committed to the postwar American consensus like those southerners who remained unreconstructed after the the American Civil War. RL Dabney, a deeply committed Southern theologian and lover of his Virginia, rises to the defense of his homeland against what he perceives to be a spirit of homicidal cultural slander.

Not only was Dabney and pastor and theologian, he was also active as a public intellectual and participant in the political affairs of Virgina. He was an army chaplain of the Confederate army, and a stalwart defender of Stonewall Jackson, for whom he served as chief of staff and biographer.

Herein, he defends Virginia and the South at large based on an historicist understanding of the framework of slavery as it was integrated into Southern life.
